I don't understand why there isn't any jobs in PEI and if there is some and why are they very low paying???

I am from Ontario looking to move to PEI in 2 years because the house costs in Ontario, I can't even afford a newer house!! I have been talking to a lady at Maritime Electric for a linesman job. The pay is a low $17.00 to start but the housing in PEI is afford...

I think you've been living the good life in a "have" province for too long... 17 bucks an hour is good pay... when the average job (besides slinging hash as some fast food joint) is 9-11 bucks an hour... if you can get a job, be happy.. some can't... don't bitch about how poor 17 bucks an hour is....

$17 .......man.....thats aweful.........

i think we have low paying jobs here.....because....um......it keeps our crime rate down....i mean really....if you dont have much of anything financially..it keeps people from breaking into your home to get it...

shouldnt that be everyones goal? to live in safe neighbourhoods?

dam 17 bucks an hour in ch town hmm i could pull cable for that... 17 is pretty good for pei.. especially just walkin in the door.. whats that equate to 30 some thousand and that not include over time or late night repair calls.. remeber the power goes out all the time here and the crews work alot of extra hours in the winter...

According to Stats Canada the average wages on PEI far April 2006 are as follows:

Ages 15-24 $9.71
Ages 24-55 $17.18
Ages 55 and over $18.18

$17 would be pretty average.

Well the average for women as a whole group is $15.98, so that brings you closer.

Here's the whole report lord knows how accurate it is.

$17 an hour is great for PEI....
When I graduated Uni 5 years ago I was offered a job @ Global in Toronto...$28.67 per hour. I checked out the appartments in TO @ the same time...$2400 per month!!!!That equals 28,000 bucks a year....job equals 37,500 take home per year...leaving 10,000$ to live off of..sounds not bad...but I can make $10 per hour here...and pay $600 per month rent...and have a better standard/safer/better family life than making the big bucks in TO. If you want a safer place to raise kids...don't want to suck in pollution everyday...take the $17 per hour...your body will thank you.

statistics like that can be very much misleading, though.

Say you have ten people. Nine of them make 10 dollars an hour. One makes 100 dollars an hour.
The average is 19 dollars an hour. Doesn't reflect the reality of the situation.

Ontario is one hell of a huge province! If the housing costs are too high in Toronto (or the huge sprawling urbanized area surrounding it), there are about a zillion small towns and isolated cities where housing is affordable -- not just in Ont but all over the country.

In fact, if you're trained in that kind of work, and aren't tied down and can move wherever you want, you can pretty much have your cake and eat it too.

You're seriously thinking of moving to PEI for the cheap housing? Well, the island has some of the most affordable housing in the country (even waterfront is a lot less than what people pay elsewhere). But it sounds crazy to move to PEI for that reason and that reason only. PEI might be for you -- but you should make sure it agrees with you.

I still don't make 17 bucks an hour... and I don't forsee myself making 17 bucks an hour in the near future.... and the fact that someone is complaining about making that much is beyond me... live my life, buddy.. make $900 a month and try to live off that....

Its not just because of the housing, its because of the beauty, safeness etc, I guess I was just more shock on the wages comared to Ontario's wages, thats all....

I've gotten schooling as well.. and hope to get more... but with the money that I make, I can't afford it at the moment.. I'm just saying that I don't understand how you can complain about $17 an hour.. If I was making that, it would almost double my take home.. I mean, yeah.. we don't have the high paying wages like Ontario.. but we also don't have high housing costs.. high crime.. smog.. it all balances out.. if I was you, I'd take that job.. you'd probably get a raise after 3 months too... you'd be living the high life in a year..

It's all in where your view of it is. If I was offered a job at $17/hour I'd have to turn it down because I couldn't afford to take it and still pay my bills but looking at it from making less money the $17 it would seem like a great deal.
