I am a member of the Progressive Conservative Party and I just received a very troubling phone call. Staff at the Opposition Office - which is a taxpayer funded entity responsible directly to the Legislative Assembly (and Speaker) are evidently calling Tory party members and totally spinning the leadership review issue. They're asking people to show up on Saturday to the PC AGM "to support Olive Crane" and asking them to vote against a leadership review. What a crock. When I asked too many questions about who they were and whether they were being paid by the taxpayers of PEI to make the phone call, they hung up!

I might be wrong, but I think it is a crime to sit in a government office on taxpayer funds and do partisan politicking. Does anyone know if this is legal? Can they pay their staff to do internal party work?

I'm confused.

You said they are from the opposition office but you weren't sure who they were?

As far as I understand, it is illegal for opposition staffers to make such calls.

The calls were coming from the Opposition Office but when I asked them to tell me their name and title they got shifty and wouldn't give me details. Seems like they know they aren't supposed to be doing that.

I think the main question was how do you know they're coming from the opposition office specifically? Caller ID? Callback? Someone can say they're with the opposition, does not mean it's coming from the office.

Caller ID number came up and I checked it on reverse lookup 411 to confirm who it was.

It is very easy to spoof the Caller ID number, different sites on the internet allow you to make calls, and you pick whatever number you want.

So would you not report them to the authorities?

Just curious as to who you would report this to?

Since when does the Government actually do anything about employees making personal calls on their breaks?

Since always.
You are not allowed to use a government facility for campaigning. If goverment employees want to break the law on their break they have to do it off of government property.

Really well someone should tell the City people that. I know of several City people who make personal calls from work with the Government. Besides if you are making calls from your office afterhours what is the big deal? Not like Government employees don't steal other things. Plus how does anyone know they are not paying for the calls or is there a policy that allows them to do it. It is afterall the Opposition Office which would be pretty close to beinga political office. This shounds like much to do about nothing unless the person receiving the call doesn't agree with what the caller is saying. Obviously they are not calling the general public they are calling people who are on the Party membership list.

SSounds more like sour grapes.

But we aren't talking about municipal government here. Perhaps they have different rules than the province or the feds have.

A call home or a call to make a doctor's appointment isn't quite the same thing that we are talking about.

Because it is against their terms of employment if you are conducting partisan political business.

The only policy is one that forbids them to do it.

Are there any other conservatives on this board that received one of these calls other than islander902? It is just so far you have posted about Olive Crane selling her soul for PNP, Olive launching Slate of Stooges, and of course the worst YouTube video ever created. With all the attacks, I find myself questioning whether or not this call even occurred.

Sure starting to look that way.
This user has zero credibility at this point.
