223 University Avenue

I am sometimes amazed about the things I know and what I can find on the Internet.

Take, for example, 223 University Avenue Charlottetown PEI. It s the current location of the Beijing Restaurant owned by Rita Zhou. Before it became the Beijing it was the Interlude Café which was owned by Ally Cheng Fen Kuo.

223 University was the office for years of James Daniel Murphy, DDS

If you go to the City of Charlottetown web site you can find information about 223 University Avenue - see: http://www.city.charlottetown.pe.ca/sea ... ropid=2649

My first connection to this property goes back to when I was two or three years old. My parents, my brother and I were on the Island for a visit. My parents put me in the fenced back yard at my grandfather's house. I, being an inquisitive two or three year old, managed to crawl under the fence and make my way (crossing Elm Avenue) to Art Lawlor's store at 23 Elm Avenue (as it was then). I was eventually reunited with my parents and brother after, I am sure, charming the Lawlors.

Art Lawlor was a double amputee. He had been a Letter Carrier, got frost bite, then gangrene and subsequently lost both legs. He opened a small corner store at the corner of Elm Avenue and Passmore Street. I can remember him sitting in his wheelchair at the end of the counter - a mysterious, and to a small child somewhat scary character. Mr Lawlor bought space in The red and White Advertisements. See:

Art Lawlor's was one of several stores in the area. There was Manual's Lucky Dollar Store at the corner of Bishop Street and Elm (now University) Avenue; P.J. Cudmore's at the corner of Elm Avenue and Euston Street; and Diamond's Grocery at 49 Elm Avenue.

Thanks for the memories, Islander.

In the late 50s Bill Bevans operated a bike shop and Triumph motorcycle dealership around the corner on Passmore St. I was a member of a motorcycle club known as the Road Aces, and we 'hung out' at Bevans' shop a lot.

Lawlor's store served as our provision supplier - pop, chips, cigarettes, etc.
