Has anyone tried a Roku media box on their TV?
I picked on up and they are amazing! Netflix works like a charm on it. There are also some other good channels in it. You can stream your content from a computer to it using PLEX.
Best 89 bucks I spent.
Getting some for Christmas gifts this year.

There may be a new game in town pretty soon. I came across an article this past week that indicated a new version of Boxee TV will be adding a HDTV tuner and DVR capabilities. Pretty exciting stuff for the Cordcutter community. http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/8/34746 ... a-dvr-apps

How many over the air channels is everyone picking up on the Island? Anything besides US Network, CBC, CTV?

I'm interested in getting one of these but want to know what all can they do first. I have a wii that I can play movie files through, but it won't play all movie types so I am thinking about getting one of these, i guess the one I was looking at was the roku 2 xs but am open to suggestions.
Will it play movie formats like .mov .avi .mp4 .mkv and others?
Will it play unconverted ripped dvd files that are still in the "VIDEO_TS" folder like it was a regular dvd with menus etc (.BUP .IFO .VOB formats). Windows Media Center does this on my laptop and it is great for dvds I have saved, but it would be more convenient if I could just keep an external hard drive hooked up through a media player like roku to my tv.
any input appreciated!

Try their site. One must also note that many of the mentioned channels likely only work in the US and may require fees. I know for a fact the wd tv players I mentioned will play pretty much any format and at any bit rate. They also do a great job with dvd iso files and dvd folder formats showing dvd menus etc. The pivos I also mentioned does as well and also plays bluray isos. You can get the vd tv live streamer with built in wi fi for a hundred or less at either staples or future shop, the wd tv media hub comes with an internal 1 tb drive and can be found at future shop for $189, it is wi fi ready but needs a usb dongle for ten bucks or so. Wi fi is really not the best way to go with these or any streamer though. Both also do netflix, but the pivos does not though with a semiofficial firmware can stream content from many non-legal movie streaming sites.

I tried that site before and overlooked the "see specs" link at the bottom. According to the specs, the only roku with usb input is the roku2xs, but the only format it plays is MP4? Can anyone say for sure if this is accurate? I would expect it to at least play avi.

I picked up a used Xbox 360 pretty cheap and have been using it for all of my wireless media streaming. Works great. I haven't had any video compatibility issues yet.

I use PS3 Media Server on an old desktop, it streams all of my files to my DLNA enabled devices, including TV's, xBox, PS3, iOS devices and PC/Mac with XBMC installed.
The only device that has problems playing files from the device is an older netbook.

Again one is limited with supported and unsupported file formats, and the ps3 will not play any video ripped from a bluray encrypted with Sony's evil cinevia copy protection. The media boxes I mentioned are not crippled in any such fashion and play just about any file you throw at them, cost a hundred or less, the pivos can be had to around $60 delivered. they are also a better choice for a small foot print and for anyone not having or wanting a gaming device. They come supplied with a remote control and are no more difficult to set up than a DVD or bluray player. The only technical difficulty one will face might be if they have never ripped a DVD or bluray and will have to acquire the software and learn how to do it. Or download it, something most all ready know about.

so can anyone say for sure whether the roku 2 xs plays anything other than mp4?
i'd be interested in the xbox 360 option as well. does that work the same as a media player, or does it need to be modded first?

Roku Compatible Videos Properties: Container: MP4 Video Format: H.264 Audio Format: AAC Audio Format Profile: LC Audio Channels Number: 2 Audio Sampling Rate: 44.1KHz or 48.0 KHz but if your using plex and runing avi your computer can convert it on the fly I wouldn't watch anything but h.264 anyways, HD with the file size of SD hXXp://yify-torrents.com/browse-moviechange the xx's to t's unless you have an old libary of avi's h.264 is the way to go I run wiimc roku xbox360 tablets phones computers/laptops all streaming video to each other and the Roku is my favorite out of the lot its simple and damn easy to use
