The city is offering free water meter installations for people with idlers. http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/News/Local ... r-meters/1I figure they're going to make the meters mandatory in the next few years anyway, so might as well get one installed for free, but I have no idea what an idler is...

I'd like to know as well.

Where your incoming water service comes into your house is where you would find the idler. You will typically see 3/4" soft copper coming into your house, usually up through the floor and you will immediately see a valve to shut your house's water off. If you have an idler it will be after this first shutoff, it is a brass piece of pipe (around 6-7" I believe) between two brass nuts. Most newer homes built were required to have this idler which is the same length as a water meter to make future installation easy and quick. If I get a chance later I will look for and post a picture.

Not the best picture as this isn't the typical installation you would see around here, but gives you a good idea. The idler is the tarnished piece of blueish brass you see between the two nuts.

I'm pretty sure when the city came to install my new meter (the wireless type) the idler in place was for the old sytle meters where a wire went to a sensor outside for reading.
I had to have a plumber come in and "adjust" this idler space, I believe the new meters are shorter than the old ones.
The ilder is basically the pre determined lenght of the meter..correct ?
