For those with isn.net email addresses, apparently you (and I) are about to lose them. See Ruk's post here: http://ruk.ca/article/4659

I believe anyone who has a website hosted with ISN or at least some people will also have to find a new host.
I've had some people contact me in the last few days regarding hosting their sites that are with ISN.

Its my understanding after talking with Eastlink today is that Eastlink will continue to host people's websites if they use Eastlink as their ISP. If a person was just hosting a website at ISN and using say Aliant for their ISP they will now need to move that website elsewhere.

The ISN Tech phone number at Eastlink is: 892-4476

Will the URL remain the same or will isn.net/...... become eastlink.ca/....?

My email hasn't been answered yet...

It was my understanding in the emails that we received from Kevin O'Brien and the letter I received from Eastlink that email addresses would stay the same unless you canceled it for some reason...

ok.. I read the post on the stie.. then checked my email.. I've received nothing from Eastlink on this.. so I believe the info to be false..

Go to Eastlink.ca, the information is there Riki.

No sweat for me - I never use my isn e-mail account.

Ok.. now I'm going to find the letter I received from them.... because that was not there..

I use my email for a lot of different business transactions.. anything where money changes hands.. I really don't want to have to go to all those places and change my email address.. because that'll probably mean setting up new accounts... what a pain in the ass..

They have just changed their isn faq - see the very bottom:http://www.isn.net/faq.htm

Kevin is going to try and do something about it, check the comments on Ruk's post http://ruk.ca/discuss/4659

Latest is a letter from Eastlink:

Quote:
IMPORTANT email address conversion

On January 31, 2008, EastLink became your Internet service provider as a

result of our purchase of Island Services Network (ISN). EastLink has

been proudly serving Maritimers for more than 35 years. During this

time, we have grown to become the largest privately held communications

and entertainment company in Canada and have more than 800 employees

located in offices throughout Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.

EastLink will be converting all customer email addresses from the

existing ISN email address to new EastLink addresses throughout March

and early April. This change is necessary to provide the full range of

features and benefits provided with EastLink's email service including

expanded virus protection and spam filtering.

Please call us at 1-888-345-1111 to select your new EastLink email

address. It is imperative that this occur before April 15th, 2008, the

date which ISN email addresses will no longer operate. If you have

already changed your email address, please disregard this message.

Our Technical Support Representatives will be happy to assist you in

setting up your new EastLink email address and updating your email

client. Throughout this time, you will continue to receive email at your

current ISN address, however, please note as of April 15th, 2008 emails

sent to your old ISN email address will be returned to sender as

undeliverable. We understand that changing your email address is

inconvenient, however it is a necessary step in providing you with the

reliability and performance that has made EastLink's Internet service

one of the best in North America.

Please note that customers who utilize personal webspace will also need

to transfer it to EastLink by April 15th, 2008. This can be arranged on

the same call.

Note: If you are an EastLink Business client, and currently use an ISN

email account, please call 1-877-813-1727 to select your new EastLink

address. If you have a business vanity email (i.e.

johnsmith@abccompany.com) no changes are required.

Thank you for your understanding during the transition to EastLink. We

look forward to providing you with the excellent service for which

EastLink is known.

Regards,

Dan McKeen

lots of questions here and not sure who to blame. Is Kevin giving eastlink that said server or not?

None the less, I can't believe Eastlink is doing this.

Eastlink said "The addresses will need to be changed to eastlink addresses by April 15th when ISN shuts down their email server."

To which Kevin said "If this, "...when ISN shuts down their email server..." is actually the words used, and if they represent an official position, then someone is playing games. There is no ISN other than themselves."

Well from reading that blog it looks like even Kevin was gobsmacked.

IMHO the line "When ISN shuts down their mail server" is deliberately misleading since Eastlink is now ISN.

Depends on the purchasing agreement. If ISN purchased only the customers and not the servers (which Eastlink would already have) then I would understand.

I'm sure Kevin would know what he was talking about.. and what was actually purchased by Eastlink..

Although I don't understand the "workings" of mail servers, etc. - unless ISN had a clause in the contract specifically stating that Eastlink must keep the ISN mail server going.....Eastlink can pretty much do what they please.

For all we know, Eastlink may have only purchased the clients and not necessarily all the ISN equipment. The logic here would be, why would Eastlink bother spending money on something they don't need. After all, they already have everything they need to be a ISP.

Too many variables here to put a blame on one person or another. Although we may wish to blame the big bad corporation, its not always right.

from what was said on the blog.. it looks like Kevin got assurances that emails would be kept as they are.. it can't be that hard to do.. other ISPs do it all the time... I know of one ISP that we do support for actually gives the customers that they acquired a choice.. to use either the old address that they always had, or a new one.. both addresses are on their account, and and emails send to one address can be seen if connecting to the other.. so I know it can be done...
and apparently, Kevin is losing email addresses too.. so he wants to get it cleared as much as we do

or it definitely can be done. no question about that. it's the cost involved that eastlink may not want to be bothered getting into.
