A driver is dead following a crash Saturday at the Oyster Bed Speedway.
Cars from the Maritime provinces were on hand for an evening of racing that culminated in the 100-lap finale that involved the crash under investigation. During the 98th lap, one of the vehicles flipped onto its roof in a single vehicle crash.
An RCMP news release says the male driver survived the crash but he removed some safety equipment while he was hanging upside down, which resulted in his death. He was a 30-year-old from Riverview, N.B.
The evening races were part of a sanctioned race event produced by the Oyster Bed Speedway race track, and Scotia Speedworld - Modified Pro Stock race circuit for Maritime Canada. The news release says the race was run in conjunction with reasonable safety protocols that were followed.
Island EMS and the Queens RCMP responded to the crash.
The Oyster Bed Speedway operates a stock car oval on the Island’s north shore.
