Ok, we have a lot of Chinese restaurants in town, but which one has the best eggrolls and why(ie so and so's aren't dry, so and so's have extra meat, so and so have best sauce etc)?

While we are on it I will also ask who makes the best Beef and Broccoli and why?

I vote for Canton as well.

I find they are the most consistent. Hot, crisp, lots of filling.

Of course, I never really bother to try anywhere else now since I'm satisfied almost always at Canton.

The best eggrolls in town are in Halifax! The Great Wall, China Town, The Look Ho Ho. The Canton are about the best you can get here. Just my humble opinion.

Used to love Canton until the last year or so, we don't eat Chinese alot but the few times we do we have been going to the GoldenWok (now MagicWok but outdoor sign still says golden), your typical food seems the same, but their eggrolls are delicious!

Best overall Chinese food in the city in my opinion, as long as you order from the right menu.

I have only ordered from their regular menu, and for your typical "Canadian Chinese" food its pretty good, I have heard of their authentic menu which I assume you are speaking of and have heard really good things! Must try this sometime soon, and recommendations?

Does the 'right' menu come with the regular menu, or do you have to ask for it? One thing I cannot tolerate is the sweet in most dishes, rendering about 90% of menus inedible for me. I wonder, is their Chinese Chinese food more to my taste than their Canadian Chinese 'cuisine'?

I've enjoyed the Canton since forever and I think their eggrolls are best, but my first experience there was unpleasant. I was a kid and didn't have any experience with anything but typical steak & potato cuisine so I did exactly what I saw my brother do. I sliced the first eggroll like he did then waited patiently for the bottle sauce he was pouring on his. It was plum sauce! Plum sauce is tasty in it's own right, but I can't take it on an eggroll any more than I can tolerate pineapple on a pizza or ketchup on a burger.

Then I went on to the other horrors: sweet & sour chicken, sweet & sour spareribs... like putting honey on potatoes.

There's the general public menu and there's the menu they give to Chinese clients.

Do you have to be able to read Chinese?

Phil

I agree. Eggrolls at the Union/Golden Wok have always been my favourite. Although I have yet to order from the "other" menu, I hear it is pretty darn good if you like authentic Chinese rather than Canadianized Chinese.
