I've been watching a few tutorial videos online and Lightroom 5 looks pretty good and less complicated than I expected. Anyone use it? Comments?

Haven't tried that, but I use GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) and there are many tutorials for using it and even a photo shop like gui is available if one wishes it. Best part is it's free.

I'll second GIMP.

Been using it for years, I swear by it.

I've been using Lightroom since version 1.5 and rarely need to use photoshop. Almost all image edits I perform happen in Lightroom.

I don't have anything bad to say about Lightroom. I have a few suggestions to help make the LR live easier; but likely covered in the same tutorials you watched :)

Lightroom is a pre-photoshop cataloging and indexing system. It performs basic editing required before doing heavy lifting in a pixel editor like Photoshop or GIMP. None of the edits in lightroom change the original file until it's exported. It sorts, keywords, captions. Photoshop alone does none of that; it comes with Bridge, bridge uses Adobe Camera Raw, which does the non-destructive editing. Does GIMP have that?

A while back you could subscribe to the photographers back via the adobe CC cloud for $10/mo, it gave you Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5.

Alternatives for Lightroom would be apps like

I've used these:
Google Picasa
Acdsee Pro
Apple Aperture
iPhoto (barely)
Bridge (comes with Photoshop)

I haven't used these:
Darktable
Lightzone

I've only watched a few tutorials so far, and some weren't very helpful. What suggestions do you have? I've edited a couple of photos in Lightroom so far. One turned out alright, but I've got a ways to go!

These tips don't have nothing to do with develop settings.

Keep one catalog; no matter what people say about performance increases, maintaining separate catalogs sucks; you can only have one open.

Backup your catalog; and write changes to XMP files. The XMP sidecar files contain all of your develop settings, keywords, etc. If something bad happens, your XMP files are available. They also work with Bridge, maybe others.

Keyword during import or right after. Lightroom is spectacular for searching, creating smart collections based on keywords. If you keyword now, life will be grand. Also - facebook, and many other file sharing sites will read from the caption and title headings.

I used to use GIMP, mostly when I used linux.

But I find that paint.net is much better on windows. Free, no ads or crapware. 10mb installed.

I don't know if it is meant for professional stuff, but for basic everyday use it makes my image editing much easier. Usually I crop stuff, and use it to scan documents/pics with my laser printer/scanner.

I think I'm going to go with Lightroom. It meets the needs of what I want in a photo editing software.

As does gimp, can't speak of the other requirements you mentioned as haven't ever had a need for them, at least not yet. Gimp has gone through a transformation recently, perhaps you should give it another try.
