:?: greetings to all in PEI, my wife and i want to move to pei from the uk , i am a Canadian citizen, having lived & worked in calgary/ottawa for 11 years during the 80`s, now retired. we are looking for a quieter time in good surroundings and pei looks ideal. a few questions, how`s the cost of living, day to day stuff? food running a car etc, i see your gas is half the price of the uk! a good plus. we did visit briefly on a whirlwind maritimes tour and liked it . thanks in advance for any and all up to date info. hope your winter is looking up i think we are getting it over here! cheers .uk ray.

Cost of living is something that is difficult to quantify since it really depends on your needs and lifestyle. I find that PEI is a quite affordable place to live. I think you will find that the people are warm and welcoming and that you would settle into life quite quickly here. I hear you on the gas prices. When we go to the Northeast of Scotland our gas ends up costing more than the car rental.

Cost of living (food, cloths, electricity...) is a little bit higher than the most of North America, gas is comparable and housing is cheaper. There is no good public transportation so vehicle is required to get by. There is waiting list for family doctor (and the line is not moving), but access to walk-in clinics is simple.

This might not be the most pleasant topic, but as a senior you might want to make sure your health conditions can be treated here. We have very limited number of medical specialists (none, 1 or 2 at most in any given field) and some health services are not provided here.

UK RAY just like in the UK there are some fringe elements here who are best ignored and pitied.
Cost of living on PEI is about par with most of the country outside of the larger cities.
It's a safe place to live and a good place to spend time. More to do than many would have you believe.

many thanks for your frank positive reply, we are just your average couple not expecting big city living just to have a bit of a quality life in our time left on the planet.

Hi UK Ray,

Have you checked out the Moving to PEI forum here:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=19447

There are several pages although some of them are a bit old but I'm sure you can find some useful info.

Gas is cheaper but British vehicles are much more fuel efficient so it's sort of a give and take. Groceries are more expensive than they are there, and I don't find as large a choice. We also don't have an Indian restaurant if you're a lover of Indian food like many Brits. However, the weather is nicer, housing is cheaper, and it's a great place to live.

Media Hint extension for either Firefox or Chrome will give you access to BBC iPlayer outside of the U.K.. Side benefit of same extension is access to U.S. based Pandora, Hulu and Netflix.

One of the biggest differences you will see is in the cost of buying anything. We have a sticker price, sometimes in plain sight, then the hidden price that you only find out when you go to pay for whatever you bought.
The hidden price is the tax to be paid. When I was in the UK, if a car was sticker-ed at 21,995. pounds than that would be the price. Here, 21,995 will cost you $25,074.30 hst added) . Buy a small cup of coffee at a Tim Horton's, expect the amount to come up as $1.43 BUT since pennies are not being used any more, you are expected to pay $1.45.
So, remember, what ever you buy here, you have to add in the tax and if no tax is charged or only a part of a tax is charged then you don't know what the final cost is until the salesperson ( who might smile at you) tells you what your final cost out of pocket is.
This is not just here on PEI, but you are moving here, you might as well be told up front.
