This is Philip Pullman's latest (of The Golden Compass/His Dark Materials fame) and I loved it. It presents a different view on the bible, what if Mary bore twins? Jesus is presented as a bit of a trouble maker, but grows into a quiet man who wants to spread God's word in a careful manner, never giving too much hope that the Kingdom will come. Christ is Mary's favourite, who wants to spread the word of God across the land and create a powerful following.

The book is broken into the stories of the bible that you may already be familiar with, but you'll notice some changes. Pullman is not exactly subtle in his criticism of the church, but that's nothing new if you read many of his other works. This book is not a bash on the church, so much as it presents an idea of what could have happened. It will get you thinking!
