My Toshiba Satellite laptop (W-vista) finally fried her mb over the weekend and we replaced her with a machine with Windows 8.1. I've been tweaking it for a few days and couldn't find the option to manipulate the 'caps-lock' function so that the shift-key would unlock it - instead of toggling it off by hitting caps-lock again.

We who learned to type on manual typewriters are accustomed to hitting the 'shift-lock' (caps-lock on a computer/telex etc) and no matter how many times you hit it, it was physically locked. Only the 'shift-key' (caps) would unlock it.

With Windows-7 and up now yuh gotta add an entry in the registry to get this "fixed".

So if you're in your 50's or so, you might want this.

Caution for the careless:
- Backup your registry.
- A restart of your machine will make the change take effect.
- If you're nervous or apprehensive about changing the registry, live with what you have.

How:
- in your registry editor (if you can't find it, it might be best to get a teenager to help you) choose HKEY_CURRENT_USER
- next click on Keyboard Layout
- edit/add "Attributes"
- double click on this new "Attributes" and change it to hexidecimal (or confirm)
- change the value to 10000 (ten thousand)

Like I said, backup your registry, make the edit, re-boot.

- When Windows 8 starts from a sleep or a boot', the NumLock is off. I checked the registry and it is set to be on at boot-up.

I'm going to assume the setting is ignored because of the above change that turns the Shift key into a Caps-Lock toggle.

- When I hit CapsLock or NumLock there is an icon that shows up on the screen for a second to let me know about it. I like that (useless) little feature.

Mine does the num lock thing occasionally, and is also doing a log out only again when I select shutdown. Think it might have something to do with using grub dual booting with linux.

You can do this from within the Windows 8 Control Panel.

Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language\Advanced settings

Under "Switching input methods" click on the "Change Language Bar Hot Keys" link.
There you have the option to use the Shift Key to turn off the Caps Lock.

Thanks Blake. I couldn't find that with a Google search. What I was able to get was more people like me who couldn't find the right way. I followed your instructions and it shows that I have it set to use the Shift to unlock Caps. I guess the registry change I found is the same change that's made when it's done properly.

I still haven't learned to appreciate getting a pagefull of useless apps instead of a navigation list when I forget myself and click on what used to be a windows icon :\ On the other hand, I can't wait for my next 419 scammer. I won't have to act dumb.

I would strongly suggest the free upgrade to Windows 10 that will be available on July 29th.
The menu will be fully configurable so you can go back to a Windows 7 style interface without third party software like Start8 by Stardock.

Windows 10 is not my cup of tea. I did "upgrade" to 10 some time ago. Tonight I tried to restore to a previous version, but it still has W10. Did I lose the files for W8.1 after a period of time?

Not my cup of tea... that's underunderstating it. I've never felt compelled to get rid of a GUI before no matter how much I disliked it... until now. The hype was hype IMO.

Missing Vista, if you can imagine.
