Can I change my IP Address and how can I do it? Will I have to re-configure anything and also for Wi-Fi?

If you are Eastlink or Aliant customer you have a public IP address (your router's IP address) and your private IP addresses for each of the devices on your local network. Eastlink assigns router's IP address based on modem's MAC address. That way, even if they do not guarantee you having the same address all the time, you end up with one for rather long periods. Keeping the modem off for extended time (days) might end up getting you a new address as someone else gets your old one.

Depending on why you need to change your IP address you can also use a proxy to make it appear you are using a different IP.

If you use Sasha's method and just unplug the router for the night you won't have to explain anything. You will be assigned a new IP address automatically.

Go to www.whatismyip.com and write down the IP shown.
Check it again after having the modem turned off over night.

So why would you want to change your assigned IP address range?

I'm not sure why someone would. I am on Aliant in the countryside and they would throttle my 160kb/s (1.2megabits/s) download speed (how lame are they?) all the way down to 20kb/s sometimes. So I would have to turn off modem and hope for new ipaddress to get rid of throttle.

I havn't had throttle problem in a several months, seems to be more rare now.

About a km away they are able to get 500kb/s. I don't expect to get 'high speed' for at least 10 years, as there is no reason to upgrade any of us stuck on 150kb/s, as were are already paying $60+ per month for slow internet. What a scam, no competition and the ghiz gov gave Aliant a monopoly on rural islanders with no tenders or anything. I was paying less in ch'town 6 years ago for 10x the speed.

Hopefully its not because they did something that they don't want to be traced back to, because ISP's are required to keep logs of who was using what IP and when.

I use my router and connect to my Aliant Internet using PPPoe (this allows my router to establish the connection through my modem, rather than the modem connecting and assigning an internal IP to my router which then in turn assigns another internal IP to my network) All I have to do to change my IP address is simply disconnect and reconnect and bang I have a new IP. Changing your IP is not going to prevent them from finding you if you were up to no good, you better believe they know what usernames were using what IPs at what time. If you doing something you shouldn't, like downloading torrents, its always good to be sitting behind a VPN!

Miss-read your post Nomie, sorry. I thought you said they "are not required", after rereading the post, yes I agree with you, they absolutely keep logs of all IP assignments! Pretty much everything you do on the Internet these days is logged. VPNs and Proxies are the way to go if you want to keep a little anonymity to your internet usage.

No problem, I didn't realize you were disagreeing with me lol. Your explanation is much more detailed than mine and it a good one.
