Maritimes promised more hockey
Last updated Aug 10 2005 07:46 AM ADT
CBC News

The man who helped bring the Moosehead hockey team to Halifax and the Screaming Eagles to Sydney is starting up a new league that will bring hockey to Summerside.

Harold MacKay launched the Canadian Elite Hockey League at a news conference Tuesday at the Dartmouth Sportsplex, home of the new Destroyers team.

The other three teams are in Summerside, P.E.I.; Sydney, N.S.; and Saint John, N.B.

The CEHL is being pitched as a development league, a chance for players to stay in Canada and play at the highest level below professional. The players will come from the major-junior, university, east coast and European leagues.

When he first floated the idea of a new league, MacKay played up the fact fans could count on fights. Now he's downplaying the potential violence.

"We won't be promoting hockey fighting, but there probably will be hockey fighting. It is not as important as the level of play in our league," MacKay said.

"There's not going to be a fan sitting in his seat that is not going to be excited in our hockey games because things do happen in hockey games and some of them are fights."

Veteran sports commentator Pat Connolly isn't surprised MacKay is trying to change the focus off fight night on ice.

"He said we were going to have a rock'em sock'em, Don Cherry kind of league. You know, a tough guy league. I don't think it went over very big and I think Harold was smart enough to recognize that," Connolly said.

Still, Dartmouth defenceman Jules Eddy Larocque – who also works as a police officer – believes fights are what fans will come to see.

"I don't want to promote fighting but there will be some fighting, I'm pretty sure … and who doesn't want to see that? The other thing too, free parking," he said.

The CEHL's 36-game schedule starts in mid-October.

The names of the other teams will be announced in the next few weeks.

For a league that doesn't necessarily want to promote the fighting aspect, they sure do talk a lot about it.
Oh, and free parking.

Sounds like this could be WWE on Ice.

This is definitely NOT going to work.

They started out promoting it as a league with lots of fighting.

Now they've toned it down a bit.....on someone's advice, for sure.

They're touting it as a "developmental league".

Wake up, folks: We already HAVE lots of developmental leagues, all in minor pro, like the AHL and the ECHL, or whatever they call it this year.

Scouts are going to come over to Summerside to watch these guys play, instead of watching prospects and Junior drafts in the AHL? - Not likely!

No, this is going to be like the goon league in Québec, except it won't last.

Matter of fact, it might not even get off the ground!

With the PEI owners reputation, he will struggle getting sponsorship. Sad thing is that for every dollar he takes in is that much less someone else is going to get.

Jr A & Jr B's are upset that our City is pushing hard for this temp team at their expense when both have a long history supporting local kids.

Bottom line is, you can't "invent" leagues like that.

Leagues exist when there are already-existing teams in different cities, all playing similar caliber of hockey (or whatever sport we're talking about), and wanting to get together for regular, organized competition.

That's how ALL durable leagues have started out, whatever the sport......NHL, NFL, CFL, Major League Baseball....down to AHL, former IHL, and Junior hockey leagues.

With college or University sports, the connection comes easily - the schools have all existed for a long time, they've all had sports programs for decades, and they want to compete against each other.

When you try and 'invent' a league, like the XFL, or the Canadian Baseball League, the World Football League, the U.S. Football League, it never works.....it's usually gimmicky, and the novelty wears out pretty quickly.

This so called "Elite" league won't last, probably won't even finish their first season, if they even get underway at all, which I doubt very much.

WE DON'T NEED A NEW LEAGUE - WE NEED BETTER HOCKEY!

Why do you insist on sullying the great name of the Maple Leafs by typing it in all lowercase? Like 'em or hate 'em, you gotta accord the Leafs some respect!!

the Leafs....ICK.....

Montreal all the way baby!!!

I also don't think this league will be overly successful......

Not a big fan of university hockey at all.....but will take in a panters game or two this year when they play Moncton and Pierre Andre Bureau returns to PEI as a member of the Moncton team!

I guess that I am a real anomaly ... I've always been a fan of both the Leafs and Habs ... perhaps that goes back to the days when they were the only Canadian teams in the NHL :)

I guess that I misunderstood that you understood that I understood. Please understand my misunderstanding that you were capable of understanding that I was understanding ... but I appear to have mistakingly understood that you had a sense of humour.
