Name change confirmed, Charlottetown Civic Centre will become Eastlink Centre

Montreal has the Bell Centre.

Toronto has the Air Canada Centre.

Now, The Guardian can confirm, Charlottetown will have the Eastlink Centre.

The Charlottetown Islanders, which kicks off the 2013-2014 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season tonight, will join the Charlottetown Civic Centre and Eastlink in announcing a new partnership at Friday’s home opener which will see the Charlottetown Civic Centre renamed Eastlink Centre.

Charlottetown Islanders’ president Peter MacDonald says the partnership will benefit not only the Charlottetown Islanders hockey club but all users of the Eastlink Centre for years to come.

“We look forward to showcasing the Charlottetown Islanders on Eastlink TV to further develop our brand and bring exciting hockey to their many customers,” said MacDonald.

“We are pleased to partner with a company that shares our values of giving back to the community and look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

The financial details of the deal were not made public citing contract confidentially.

The centre’s general manager, Dave McGrath, said this has been a truly collaborative effort between Eastlink, the Charlottetown Islanders and the city of Charlottetown “… in developing the new name and brand of the centre.”

Jeff Brown, Eastlink general manager for the Maritimes, said his company is proud to deliver on its commitment to the city of Charlottetown and local sports.

“We’re honoured to help support such an integral part of Charlottetown’s community,” said Brown.

“Every year, this centre hosts many world-class events, including hockey from local favourites, the Charlottetown Islanders. We are looking forward to the exciting community events that will be hosted here.”

« JUST THE FACTS: The Eastlink Centre is a combined hockey arena, trade and convention facility with seating for more than 3,500. Each year, the centre hosts sporting events, banquets, conferences, expos and the P.E.I. Provincial Home Show. » ... k-Centre/1
