RDS reporting Savards have given deadline to local investors

On Tuesday, the P.E.I. Rocket sent an e-mail to local media about a "significant announcement" for Wednesday.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey team had sent an e-mail earlier this week announcing it would reveal its new logo and colours on Thursday in Charlottetown.

A new name, the P.E.I. Islanders, was chosen by the fans in a contest last fall.
The first e-mail sent by Trent Birt, Rocket vice-president of operations, arrived at the Guardian on Monday at 5:09 p.m.

Then a second e-mail arrived Tuesday at 12:55 p.m., also from Birt, altering the first e-mail.

Here is the content of the first e-mail message received Monday:

Good afternoon,
Thursday, April 18, at 10:30 am, The PEI Rocket will be holding a press conference at the Charlottetown Civic Centre, in Meeting Room #1 (upstairs). At this time, we will be launching our new PEI Islanders name and logo, providing an overview of our 2012-13 season with some insight on our 2013-14 season, and giving details on our 2013-14 Season Ticket campaign.

And here is the second message on Tuesday:

Good afternoon,
The PEI Rocket is holding a press conference with a significant announcement tomorrow (Wednesday), at 10:30, in Meeting Room 1, at the Charlottetown Civic Centre. The announcement does not include any rebranding information. As a matter of fact, Thursday’s scheduled press conference has been postponed.

RDS, the French language version of TSN, is reporting Serge Savard and Serge Savard Jr., who own the Rocket, have given a group of unnamed local investors until April 26 to buy the team or it will be sold to a group headed by current NHLers François Beauchemin and Marc-Andre Fleury, and former pro Marc Denis.

That group would move the team to Sorel, Que.
Rumours of the team moving or being sold and then moved have swirled around it for years, talk spurred on by dwindling attendance and lack of playoff success.

This season, the Rocket won a franchise-record 41 games, reached the playoffs after a year's absence and posted two players with 100-plus points.
Lower Sackville, N.S., native Ben Duffy, a five-year player with the Rocket, led the league in scoring and assists with 110 and 71, respectively, while Josh Currie, Charlottetown native and team captain, finished third overall with 104 points and led the league in shorthanded goals (10).

P.E.I. lost to Val-d'Or in six games in the teams best-of-seven first round matchup.

It's just as well.....under Savard, we'd never have a successful franchise here in PEI!

Guess this means the city won't need to spend $40 million on a new arena?

I think if the local investors can get the cash to buy the Rocket/Islanders it would be the best thing for the team. I will be curious to see who the local investors are when they are named

I guess this means they'll not change their name to the Islanders unless they move to CB, BC or MTL.

Heh can't blame for trying.

How were the Rockets even doing in their league play? Haven't heard much good about them. I understand the need for a local team but if they're just going to take and take without really having much to show for it well...

Let's see ...ummm ... franchise record for points in a season ... two Rocket players leading the scoring race for most of the season.

Most successful and entertaining product they have ever iced.

Word around Summerside this morning is saying a Doug MacLean / Brad Richards co-ownership bid.

Might be an interesting combination if true.

Im pretty sure he was on sportsnet within the last 2-3 days and said he wasn't interested in the Rocket at all.. that the idea of buying them was presented but he wouldn't be able to commit the time to it?

I can't imagine why he would want it, last time I spoke with him about a month and a half ago, he and his group were still trying to buy a NHL team.

It's too bad they've given such a short time for local investors. Coming up with that kind of money in such a short time is hard enough but there is so much more to it than that, in essence a local group would be starting up a business venture in 10 days. Rather hard to come up with a company plan, look at key people you would need to bring on board to run things and get everyone to agree in what direction to go in. If given a proper time frame I think it could be done with a local group but hard to be optimistic about it when only given 10 days or so.

Yup,, its all over, the fat lady is getting ready to sing. Too bad. I have a gut feeling if this team played out of Summerside they would have not had the attendance woes. Might have been a bit more successful.

A little late (years?) on branding the team to be PEI specific. Islanders are a homey lot, never really took to the "team from away". Serge and the kids should have seen it if they actually lived here, being french and from away themselves...

I was watching CBC News Now at lunch and on ticker at the bottom of screen it said "local group coming together to buy Rocket". Also, this morning Mitch Cormier of CBC radio tweeted saying there was a local group of 12-14 investors looking to buy Rocket but league will not move deadline.

Anyone else hear anything?

At the very least, the Ghiz Government can let the investors borrow the money at the Government rate......after all they will employ at least 5-10 people!

On a serious note though, why not. I've seen money wasted on much worse ideas and having a Q Team in your capital city can have it economical benefits.
