Phil Mickelson sues for identity of online heckler (288 Words)

With his wife and mother battling cancer and having a sick child, Phil had enough. The comments that he had an illegitimate child, had gambling debts that forced him to change sponsors and that his wife had an affair with Michael Jordan have some Montreal resident in a bit of hot water. It might not clean up the internet garbage but it might be a small step towards draining the swamp.
You go, Phil.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Golfer Phil Mickelson has won a lawsuit against a Canadian Internet provider to obtain the identity of a person who posted online comments that he calls “highly defamatory.”

A Montreal lawyer for the American athlete said Thursday a Quebec Superior Court judge granted a court order Monday to force Quebec-based provider Videotron to release the identity and co-ordinates of the author of several “vexatious statements” posted on a Yahoo! website.

The “vicious” comments, according to Mickelson’s motion, suggested he has an illegitimate child and that his wife has affairs.

“The statements have profoundly shocked the plaintiff and constitute deliberate and persistent attacks on his impeccable reputation,” the golfer’s court documents show.

The individual used the pseudonyms “fogroller” and “longitude” to post his or her anonymous comments.

Yahoo! traced the Montreal resident who registered under the pseudonym “fogroller,” but further investigation established the person is a subscriber of Videotron Internet service.

Looking for 2 bedroom apartment (180 Words)

If anyone knows of a 2 bedroom, ground level apartment located in Charlottetown in a nice location, I would appreciate some info.

I am in a sub basement which is damp during the summer and I have paid rent increases 5 times in the last 4 years. We have new tenants in the building that love to party and the landlord does nothing about it.

I am a quiet individual with a small shizhu but have a mobility issue; hence the need for a ground floor apartment. It would be wonderful if it was in the $650 range with a washer/dryer in the apartment.

I am going this route as I have not found what I am looking for. The apartment is not needed right away, in fact, I would prefer not to move until early/mid summer.

Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated; if you are a landlord, I would like to speak with you.

thanks in advance for your help ...

Man seeks $50,000 after tripping in store (247 Words)

Some say walking under a ladder is bad luck.

A Charlottetown man hopes tripping over one is worth $50,000.

The 33-year-old city resident who asked not to be named is looking for a healthy payoff for his painful stumble last November in a store in the capital city.

The man says he was looking up at items on a shelf when he tripped over a ladder that was “lying carelessly on the floor.’’

Pain Clinic in Danger of Closing (309 Words)

The Pain Clinic (located above Parkdale Murphy's pharmacy) which is open on Tuesdays and run by Dr. Ron Whalen (who is also a full-time ER doc) is once again in danger of closing because Health PEI does not support one of his methods of pain management--namely marcaine injection. He has been highly trained and the method has also proven very effective for many people's pain allowing them to either come off of or reduce narcotic pain medication.

Very recently, when the Master Agreement (the contract that binds the doctors and Health PEI) was being negotiated, the doctors insisted that this Pain Clinic be kept in place. It took a huge burden off the already overworked orthopedic docs as well as the family physicians. It appeared to the doctors that their wish was granted and the Pain Clinic was safe.

However, Health PEI has now disallowed any billing for the majority of the pain relieving injections. AND it is legal according to the new Master Agreement. They actually managed to sneak it in without the doctors knowing. At this point, Health PEI has hired a doctor from NS to review all the charts at the Pain Clinic to see if the practice is "medically necessary".
Dr.Whalen is about to give up jumping through hoops again and again.

All his patients (me included) will lose out. Their families will lose. All the patients that currently see Dr. Colohan and are being sent to Dr. Whalen are going to lose, as will their families. And so to will any Islander who has the misfortune of finding themselves aging and in pain, or in an accident and in pain, or know and love somebody who is in chronic pain....
...Islanders are going to lose because Health PEI is nickeling and diming an essential service--PAIN MANAGEMENT that doesn't use narcotics....

Quebec's influence (194 Words)

The Progressive Conserative (PC) party led by Brian Mulroney achieved the largest Parliamentary majority in Canadian history in September, 1984 taking 204 seats.

In the early 1990's the Bloc Quebecois (BQ), which started as a coalition of PC and Liberal members of Parliament from Quebec, broke away from the Progressive Conserative party and became a federal political party in its own right, which led to the gutting of the Progressive Conserative Party in the election of 1993, and the subsequent rise of the Reform Party and union of the PC's and Reform into the Conserative Party. The PC's went from a 151 seat majority to two seats. The BQ elected 54 of 75 seats in Quebec.

In the last Federal election the electors in Quebec elected 59 New Democratic party (NDP) Members of Parliament, a major contribution to the 103 seats held by the NDP. The Liberal party in Quebec went from 14 seat in Quebec to 7 and were reduced to third party status in the House of Commons.

I am surprised by how Quebec seems to determine the fate of political success and failure in Canada....

Local (Atlantic) beef (104 Words)

As with most people I have routines. One of them is buying my beef at either the Atlantic Super Store or Sobey's.

Recently I purchased stewing beef from Bluefield Meats and Atlantic striploin steaks from Co-op Atlantic (Queen Street). I found these purchase to be tastier ( more beefier - if that makes any sense) than most of the meat I buy from the major super markets - although I did have an excellent prime rib roast from Atlantic Super Store just before Christmas.

Anyone else notice any difference in flavor like this or did I just luck out twice?...

Romney wins Florida by 20% margin (155 Words)

According to network leaks (say several internet 'in the know' blogs) Mitt Romney has won Florida with 49% of the vote compared to Newt's 30%. The polls close in 25 minutes in the Florida panhandle and at that time the networks are able to make predictions based on raw data from Southern Florida and exit polls from the panhandle.

The Romney campaign predicted a win by 5%... if Romney wins by significantly more than that, up in the double digits, will someone drop out?

Gingrich - at this point - must be on the Obama campaign payroll to be going after Romney so far from the left. But Santorum .... what's he even doing here? His whole campaign is based around his desire to be Vice President, not President. (I think). It's time for him to go if he gets less than 15% in a 4 man race.

Thoughts?...

You've probably seen the demographic and economic information 'trial balloons' the Federal Government is launching as they prepare to ask those of us approaching retirement to 'save more'.

Here's some 'belt-tightening' information for them.

Franklin “Chuck” Spinney is a former military analyst for the Pentagon.

'Out of Altitude, Airspeed and Ideas...But Never Out of Money
The On-Going Scandal of the F-35
by FRANKLIN C. SPINNEY'

No program better illustrates the pathologies of the weapons acquisition process as it is currently practiced by the Military – Industrial – Congressional Complex (MICC) than the entirely predictable, and in this case, predicted, problems dragging the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter into a dead man’s spiral.

The F-35 in on track to be the most expensive program in the history of the Defense Department, and it has repeated just about every mistake we invented since Robert McNamara concocted the mult-imission, multi-service TFX — a program conceived with the same kind of fanciful one-shoe fits all imaginings as the F-35.

Technical problems, cost overruns, and schedule slippages caused the TFX to implode into one of the most infamous debacles in Pentagon’s history.

But the F-35 program is not at serious risk, despite all the hysterical hype in the trade press — not by a long shot. The F-35?s political safety net has been front- loaded and politically engineered (the general practices of the power games are explained here) with exquisite malice of forethought. Domestically, the F-35 employs 130,000 people and 1300 domestic suppliers in 47 states and Puerto Rico. The only states missing the gravy train are Hawaii, Wyoming, and North Dakota. Internationally, there are already cooperative development/production plans involving nine countries, and more are in the offing. Given the intensity of the geographic carpet-bombing of contracts around the globe, can there be any question why the Secretary of the Air Force said in September, “”Simply put, there is no alternative to the F-35 program. It must succeed.” If you think that is an accident, dear reader, I have a Brooklyn Bridge to sell you.

Media Bias and the NDP (265 Words)

As someone who generally views the government as being 'a necessary evil,' I'm no fan of the NDP. However, I think the Official Opposition/ NDP are getting a raw deal from the national media and I don't understand why they're taking it sitting down. The NDP are the Official Opposition, which means they are an official entity within our democratic system. They just won their biggest electoral victory ever. And they're having a leadership race with debates across Canada and some interesting candidates.

Yet, the media (which is decidedly left-of-center in Canada) almost completely ignore the second-place party in favor of the third-place Liberal Party which is anything but news. The Liberals have consistently done worse and worse in each of the last five national elections. They're not an official entity in our parliament (there's no Official Other Opposition) and they don't have a leadership race. In what can only be described as a total embarrassment for anyone trying to find some degree of fairness in the Canadian media world, the media heavily covered the race for party president in the Liberal ranks. (Can anyone name the president of the Tory party? No. Of course not. It's not a position that matters to anyone.)

The media are giving significantly more coverage to the Libs than to the NDP. When they do pay attention to the NDP it's usually to comment on how little coverage they themselves are giving to the Leader of the Opposition. If I were a member of the NDP, I would take issue with this. Does anyone else agree?...

Could use People's help on this one (564 Words)

Got this email a few days ago, could use some help on this on,it concerns Province of Prince Edward Island.

Mayor Clifford Lee
City of Charlottetown

Dear Mr. Lee: The resolution below is a draft of a resolution we hope
the City of Charlottetown will discuss and endorse at its next monthly
meeting on February 13.

WHEREAS the Canadian government is close to concluding negotiations
with the European Union (EU) on a Comprehensive Economic and Trade
Agreement (CETA), with participation from provinces and territories; and

WHEREAS the City of Charlottetown recognizes the importance of trade to
local, provincial/territorial and national economies but also the impact
that trade agreements can have on the powers of local governments; and

WHEREAS in the CETA, Canada has exchanged an initial procurement offer
with the EU (listing sub-federal entities that will be bound by the
rules of the procurement chapter) that may include the City of
Charlottetown and would explicitly tie the City of Charlottetown to the
terms and conditions of an international trade agreement; and

WHEREAS the EU is insisting on full access to procurement by
municipalities, school boards, universities, hospitals, utilities and
other provincial agencies, which could significantly reduce the freedom
of these bodies to hire or source locally on public contracts, or to use
public spending as a tool for economic development, environmental
protection and support for local farmers and small businesses; and

WHEREAS procurement rules in CETA combined with investment protections
related to transit, water, electricity, and other public services
delivered locally may lock in privatization and make it prohibitively
expensive to apply new regulations, to re-municipalize services, or
create new municipal programs; and

WHEREAS the City of Charlottetown already has an open and fair
procurement policy, and that it not the international norm for municipal
governments to be covered by procurement agreements such as the one
proposed in the CETA; and

WHEREAS disputes by private firms against local policy decisions could
be taken before private trade tribunals that lack transparency and have
the authority t impost fines;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Charlottetown at its February
13th meeting, 2012 requests:

* that the Province of Prince Edward Island issue a clear, permanent
exemption for the City of Charlottetown from the Canada-EU CETA, and
that it otherwise protect the powers of municipalities, hospitals,
school boards, utilities, universities and other sub-federal agencies to
use public procurement, services and investment as tools to create local
jobs, protest the environment, and support local development; and that

* the Province of Prince Edward Island disclose its procurement,
services and investment offers to the EU, explain the impacts CETA would
have on municipal governance, and give M.U.S.H. sector entities
(municipalities, universities, schools, and health boards) the freedom
to decide whether or not they will be bound by the procurement,
investment and regulatory rules in the agreement; and that

* this resolution be sent to the PEI Federation of Municipalities and
the Federation of Canadian Municipalities .

BC Pipeline (158 Words)

I'm beginning to think that Harper is going to push the building of the pipeline through BC for reasons other than economic development.

I think it's all part of putting the squeeze on Iran. It's no secret that America and Israel are pushing for tougher sanctions. I think Harper is going to ignore any and all environmental problems to make oil available to China and India. Those are the two countries that they (US and allies) are trying to get to boycott Iranian oil, how better to step up the pressure than by offering an alternative to sourcing the product.

He's blathering on about Iran being such a threat and I honestly think that this is the reason for pushing this project through BC.

I am not attempting to create a conspiracy theory, I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this aggressive push for the BC pipeline in the same light?...

Transportation to Moncton (108 Words)

Hey everyone,

I'm a bit stuck at the moment. I have a flight booked that will be leaving from the Moncton airport at 7:10am on February 17th and then returning to Moncton in the evening on February 20th. With the Acadian strike it has made it difficult to find a way to get to Moncton. I would have flown out of Charlottetown, but by leaving Moncton I am saving $700.

I was wondering if any of you have any recommendations? I'm hoping a friend will be able to take me over, but it would be nice to have a Plan B to be safe.

Thanks!...

The experience on P.E.I., however, is that summer — with tourism, fish processing and agricultural jobs in full swing — is the best time to be looking for a job. Future reports could well show the situation only gets worse.
